Professors Speak On When 2019 UTME Results Should Be Released
Two university professors have backed JAMB’s determination to release
the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results when
it finally confirms the credibility of the scores.
“We would
strictly follow the process so that we can get it right. We are less
concerned about the time, but (more about) how well and credible (the
results become); neither policy meeting nor admission will start this
month,” JAMB’s media aide, Fabian Benjamin, had said in response to why
the examination body had yet to release the results.
He
further said, “Illegality had thrived in the society of over the years
because people failed to follow issues to (their) logical conclusion.
“But we have decided to do otherwise, and we need the support of Nigerians to achieve that.”
Speaking
on the matter, Professor Femi Akinwumi of the University of Ibadan
urged Nigerians to be patient and allow JAMB to release quality results.
“It
is because it is a computer-based test that people are clamouring for
the release of results unlike when it was a paper-based test; results
are released much later those days,” he told NAN.
“Let JAMB correct all the anomalies because some people are desperate to sabotage good processes.
“It is about quality of results not that it will be released now and later withdrawn.”
Similarly,
Professor Adams Onuka, an education evaluation expert at the University
of Ibadan, urged Nigerians to give JAMB the benefit of the doubt.
“I believe JAMB wants to rectify the various issues that surfaced during the conduct of the examination,” Onuka also told NAN.
“It is better not to release results than to cancel them.
“One problem with this country is that we are quick to pass judgment when we don’t know what goes on behind.
But
Professor Clement Kolawole, a lecturer at the Department of Education,
University of Ibadan, appealed to JAMB to release results that were
ready.
He said, “It is so unfortunate that several days after
JAMB conducted entrance examination into universities, results are not
released for whatever reason.
“It is simply unacceptable for whatever reason. Whoever is supervising JAMB should call the agency to order.
“But I am not sure it is part of the duty and rights of JAMB to sit on students results indefinitely under whatever guise.
“If
some people do not deserve to have result, such should be withheld for
further investigation, that is the normal standard practice anywhere in
the world.”
